Dean's Welcome Message
 |
Welcome to the College of Health Sciences, a dynamic institution with a long
heritage. The College is an exciting environment in which to learn and work.
The College of Health Sciences was established in 1976 and was the first
college of its kind in the region. Since then it has trained and educated
health professionals in Nursing and Allied Health to meet the human
|
resource needs of Bahrain’s Ministry of Health. In addition, many students from
other Gulf countries have completed their studies at the College.
Currently the College offers the B.Sc. in Nursing and the Associate Degree in
five Allied Health specialties, Pharmacy, Public Health, Medical Laboratory
Technology, Dental Hygiene and Radiography. All of these programs will be
offered at the B.Sc. level in the near future.
Over the last few years the College of Health Sciences has witnessed major
achievements. With the continuous support of HE the Minister of Health, Dr.
Nada Haffadh, and the hard work and dedication of the College faculty, staff
and students we have increased student intake, opened new academic programs,
and we continue to develop existing programs in order to meet or exceed the
international standards.
Further, In August 2006 the College of Health Sciences signed a Memorandum of
Understanding with a consortium of major universities in Australia to establish
an academic affiliation, obtain accreditation of its program and promote
exchange of expertise and collaboration in areas of teaching and research.
These accomplishments are just the beginning, and we will continue to build on
our successes. We will continually strive to raise our standards of training to
the highest level possible.
The future looks very bright at the College of Health Sciences. We are building
on our proud heritage to ensure that the College of Health Sciences remains at
the forefront of health professions education. So whether you are a future
student, past graduate or an employee, I invite you to spend time browsing our
website. I hope that you will find something that will interest and motivate
you to join us.
Sincerely,
Dr. Shawki Abdulla Ameen

CHS Founder's Message
Bahrain can take pride for having been the First Arab country to have founded a
comprehensive College of Health Sciences twenty-five years ago. Prior to that
time, there was a small school of nursing, while all other future paramedical
personnel were sent abroad for their education. The speed with which the
College was established was phenomenal – a mere six months. Many doubts were
overcome and many obstacles were surmounted.
Thereafter, that College became the prototype for the entire Arab world, being
visited, copied, and spoken about in international and regional health
meetings.
The achievements of that College were numerous. It speeded Bahrainization of all
paramedical categories, established excellent retraining and adult education
programs, moved from granting only certificates and diplomas to granting
university degrees with all what it takes of sophistication and complex
facilities, and put the foundation for turning Salmaniya Medical Center into a
fine teaching center. Teaching and instruction depended heavily at the
beginning on expatriates; today, the College is proudly run by men and women of
Bahrain. In fact many distinguished Bahraini faculty members became consultants
for the World Health Organization, UNESCO, and ministries of health of the
region, helping in establishing similar colleges and programs.
Thirty years ago the Bahrainis constituted less that 5% of all workers in the
field of health. Today, the situation has been reversed. The College has been
an important instrument in achieving that.
In summary, the College has come a long way. It has fulfilled all the dreams of
its founders. It is a testimony of what Bahrain has always tried to be: a
country of vision, courageous initiatives, daring intellectualism and a spirit
of leadership.
