The College started teaching a computer course to the Medical Secretary Program students in 1984. In this course, an introduction to computers, BASIC programming and spreadsheets packages were taught. In 1986, a database management system package was introduced instead of the BASIC programming. In 1988, the College established a new computer laboratory. This laboratory is equipped with 20 personal computers. Since then, a new introductory computer course was designed to teach all first year students. In this course, an introduction to computers and Disk Operating System (DOS) was taught. In 1995 and again in 2005, the computer laboratory was upgraded with newer machines. Today there are two computer labs; one is operated by the library and the other by the Computer and General Sciences Department.
The Department of Computer and General Sciences is responsible for offering and reviewing computer courses. The process of reviewing the computer courses is dynamic as is the case in the computer world. Different software packages have been taught over the past years. The Department offers training in the use of computers to students enrolled in the different programs and College faculty, as well as Ministry of Health employees.
There are special computer courses offered to certain programs such as Health Education, Health Information Technology and B.Sc. Nursing students. In addition, some custom-made training programs are also offered to various groups according to the short-term needs of various divisions and departments.
Recently, computer education has been administered through a new Transferable Skills Program, designed by the Computer and General Sciences Department.
