The Educational Development Center (EDC) is a professional
resource center which assists the College of Health Sciences
(CHS) in achieving its mission and improving its educational
objectives.
The goal of EDC is to function as a technical, professional,
and educational resource for CHS faculty, staff, students,
and Ministry of Health (MoH) personnel. It also provides
facilities and expertise for coordination and development of
teaching and learning resources within CHS and MoH.

The English Language Department plays an
important role in motivating and improving the
students’ English language competencies at different
levels.

Its basic goal is to improve the learners' skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English and to equip them with a wide range of Medical Terminology to enable them to successfully follow College courses and communicate freely through the medium of English. The Department also endeavors to lay a firm foundation for postgraduate training, vocational studies and for communicative purposes in job environments.
The Department offers two categories of English Language Programs - Regular English Programs for students at the College and Continuing English Programs for a wider clientele.
Generally, at all levels, the Department seeks to broaden the learners' language base and application of English both for academic and professional purposes.

The EDC also provides a Teacher Development Program (TDP) to
produce a critical mass of teachers within health sciences
institutions, hospitals, and health centers capable of providing
and introducing change. A certificate program in Health Care
Administration is also offered.

Teacher Development Program

The purpose of this program is to enhance curriculum development and teaching
abilities of health care professionals. To that end, the entire systems
development approach to education and training is covered in this
three-semester program. Upon completion of the program, the student receives a
Post-Basic Diploma in Health Sciences Education. The Teacher Development
Program is a one year post-basic program. Students must gain 32 credits to
graduate.
Admission Requirements
This program accepts students who have at least an Associate Degree and a
minimum of three years of experience in a health care field, since they are
expected to identify, design, develop, implement and evaluate educational
interventions in various health care settings. Because courses are taught in
English, students must have adequate English speaking and comprehension
abilities (TOEFL level of at least 450).

Health Care Administration

Middle-Level Health Management is planned specifically for health care
professionals in management positions. Management is presented in a series of
five courses. Each three-hour session offers activities and solutions to
problems arising from the experience, common sense, and ingenuity of the
part-time student. The participatory format of each course is planned to
include field observations, teacher accompanied visits to the work sites and a
major problem solving research project. Participants in these courses benefit
from a team of resource people from other Directorates of the Ministry of
Health, the Civil Service Bureau, other colleges in Bahrain, and private
businesses. For those students who complete all five courses, a certificate in
Health Care Administration is awarded. Basic Management courses are also
offered for other health professionals.
